During the month of August a total of 1,589,476 passengers arrived to and departed from Malaga airport, which means an increase of 2.6% over the same months data from last year. International market growth showed an increase above 8%, this being the main reason for the increase in number of travelers, and also the number of flights. Malaga airport recorded a total of 12,140 flights, 2.8% more than in 2012.
According to the news released by Aena, most of the travelers who passed through the airport during August (actually 99% of them) flew on commercial flights. There has been a steep marked increase in number of international travelers. The total number of international passengers was 1.359.394, which is 8.2% more than last year. The number of flights connecting Malaga with foreign cities was 9.425, growing 8.6%.
By market share, the bulk of the activity is shared between the UK (565,967 passengers), Spanish destinations (225,871), Germany (158,389), France (98,298), Ireland (75,981) and Holland (68,518).
If analyzing the rate of growth of the different markets with which Málaga airport has connecting flights, there is a significant increase in number of travelers from Turkey, with twice as many passengers during August. The ranking continues with Germany - 32.06% increase-, the Nordic countries - 24.57% - and Austria - 21.57%-. On the 3rd of August, 59,918 passengers were recorded flying in and out of the airport, but the day with highest recorded flights was the 10th. The number of flight landings and takeoffs that day was 442.
Global growth rates show an increase of 1.1% when compared with last year’s data from the month of August. Between January and August, 8,856,335 passengers flew in and out of the airport. Only 70,009 flights were recorded, 2.3% less than last year. According to Aena, airlines are using larger aircraft with higher occupancy rates, so fewer planes are transporting a larger number of passengers. The international market’s growth rate in number of passengers for the year to date was 6.7% and 7% for number of flights.
