Low Cost airlines increase at AGP

Next to the airports of  Barcelona and Madrid, Malaga airport is one of the most used by low cost airlines. In fact, during the first two months of the year, the most used by low cost were Barcelona, with 816,812 passengers, showing an increase of 16.8% over the previous year, then Madrid airport, with 410,057 passengers and an increase of 3.1%, followed by Malaga airport, with 342,000 passengers, up a whopping 15.7% year on.  These low cost airlines transported 2.93 million passengers in the first two months of the year, representing a huge increase of just over 12% over the same period last year, according to data released yesterday by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

In contrast, traditional airlines transferred more than four million passengers through February, which is up 5.2% on the same period of 2013, making a total of 7 million passengers recorded in the first two months of 2014, up 8% on year. This results in the low cost companies accounting for 41.9% of passenger traffic over traditional airlines, who took 58.1% of the total. Ryanair, EasyJet and Vueling were by far the main low cost airlines being used.

Malaga airport looks set to make a record year in 2014 in the low cost area which may well see a transfer of power regarding which airline type, low cost or traditional, get the biggest slice of the cake of coming summer bookings.
