New Motorway connects Nerja with Granada

The Coast of Granada was one of the few areas of Andalucía that was yet to have a finished motorway because of its rugged topography. Today, the long awaited inauguration day has arrived. At 17.45 on Thursday the 26th June, the Minister of Development, Ana Pastor will be riding in the inaugural bus tour of the brand new and highly anticipated ten new kilometer stretch between Guadalfeo-Lobres  and Lobres-Taramay. Both are part of the Mediterranean Motorway A-7 and are located in the province of Granada between the towns of Almuñecar and Salobreña, and will be opened at the same time.

It was the last section of the motorway to be completed. Now the province of Málaga will be connected via high speed road with the capital city of Granada. The trip between Nerja to the famous city home of the Alhambra will be twenty minutes shorter, down to less than an hour. And traffic jams and dangerous curves of the old N-340 motorway will be a memory now, when driving through Salobreña and Almuñecar. Cars will be able to drive all the way from Granada to Almuñecar and from there to Nerja and the city of Malaga without leaving the motorway.

The opening of the last two road sections of this road has completed the western leg of the motorway in the Coast of Granada. This area will be connected via the A-7 from Salobreña to Málaga. So this way, after a long time waiting, Almuñecar will be quite a bit closer to the city of Granada, Nerja, Málaga and Jaén and even Madrid, which have a lot of tourist customers that visit these destinations. The drive will be safer and more comfortable also, and the economic impact is expected to be highly noticeable in both the regions of the Costa Tropical in Granada and the Axarquía in Málaga.

The Costa Tropical in Granada had been waiting for decades for the motorway to be completed. It is expected that this roadway will help tourism, and to this effect, mayor of the town of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrera, said a few days ago that Thursday was a “historic day”, “that marks a before and after in the life of the region”. “The 26th of June 2014 will be remembered in the history of Almuñecar because a historic demand has been fulfilled”. The PP mayor was proud of the fact that it has been under her political party government “the terms that had been set were fulfilled”.

The mayor wanted to thank the Minister Ana Pastor the fact that she “fulfilled her word given on her last visit” to the Coast last September, when she wore the fluorescent vest and checked the work progress in every road stretch.

Politicians, businessmen and citizens in the area of the Axarquía are also happy about the opening of the two pending road stretches. Given the proximity of the Malaga eastern section to the province of Granada, there are many travelers between the city of Granada and the neighbouring towns, whether to work, holidays or go to school.

Herrera added “ the opening of the divided motorway during the full summer season will be a boost. The punishment to Almuñecar is over”. The ordeal that thousands of drivers had to endure every holiday, every hot summer day having to remain stuck in the N-340 road when going in or out of Almuñecar is finally over. Travelers will not have to think twice when they want to enjoy a day at the beach, at least in this part of the Coast.

The mayor also recalled that this new section of the A-7 motorway, will help Almuñecar be closer to the international airport in Málaga. Up to now they had to travel through the Axarquía area. “Our big problem is now history”, added Herrera. She also hopes that the new motorway will “enable new investments in the area”.

“No doubt, the strategic position of our town because of its proximity to Málaga and Granada will enable Almuñecar to be in the cross-hairs of private sector investment”, said the mayor. She also thinks that Almuñecar will become a “tourist reference town, more so than it has been till now thanks to the ease and convenience of the new divided motorway.”
