British market keeps Malaga afloat

After the closing of the Londons World Travel Market, hotel owners in the province of Malaga feel positive. However, they keep pointing out that the highly seasonal aspect of tourism is a problem they are still fighting against. They are asking for Malaga airport to become their “ally”, by implementing direct flights, especially to Britain, to improve tourist numbers during low season in Costa del Sol.

José Carlos Escribano, president of the Association of Hoteliers of Costa del Sol, while in London highlighted the importance of Malaga airport for the whole province, and he stressed that it has “an important potential for growth”. “It must be competitive. The British market mainly travels by plane and they would rather have direct flights, rather than having to transfer”, he pointed out.

Mr Escribano trusts that the air connectivity bet in place for this winter season will continue. According to data released by AENA, the airport in Malaga will offer a total of 2.253.554 seats this winter (from the end of October to the end of March), which means an increase of 11.5% compared to data from the same time frame last year of 2012, when airlines had programmed only 2.021.404. The movements also grew by 13.7%.

Aehcos also has pointed out that tour operation is a fundamental factor when it comes to bringing tourists to the Malaga area, especially tourists from the British market, and they face the future with an optimistic attitude. “It has been our ally during the last fifty years and they will continue being our ally”. The tourism sector and wholesalers of Costa del Sol must strengthen their ties to improve the flow of medium distance destinations during winter periods with less tourist activity.

And once again, the seasonal character of the sector becomes quite a hindrance, though the positive results achieved during peak season in Costa del Sol have softened this blow. “Summer has very much eased the seasonal problem, our great curse. Hotels were also full during May and October, we kept a good sales record, which was mainly due to the British market. It has been our greatest supporter”, Escribano said.

Malaga Airport Taxi has also found that their airport transfers have been at a record high throughout the year of 2013.
